Does insurance cover aba therapy?

ABA Therapy and Insurance Coverage

Did you know that ABA for children diagnosed with autism is covered by insurance in the state of Alabama?

Here are some important things to know about insurance requirements for ABA therapy in our state:

  • ABA therapy is considered an essential health benefit under the Affordable Care Act, which means that insurance plans in Alabama must cover ABA therapy for children with autism.
  • Insurance plans may have different requirements for ABA therapy coverage, such as:
  • Age limits: Some insurance plans may only cover ABA therapy for children under a certain age, such as 18 or 21 years old.
  • Diagnosis requirements: Insurance plans may require a formal diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) from a qualified healthcare provider to approve coverage for ABA therapy.
  • Treatment duration limits: Some insurance plans may limit the duration of ABA therapy coverage, such as a maximum number of hours per week or a maximum number of months.
  • Service location: Some insurance plans may only cover ABA therapy if it is provided in certain locations, such as a clinic or center-based setting. Other plans may cover ABA therapy in the child's home or community.
  • If your insurance plan does not cover ABA therapy, you may be eligible for financial assistance through state or federal programs, such as Medicaid or the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP).
